For customers who would like to finish grind the camshaft lobes themselves, LSM can provide you with unground lobe (UGL) camshafts where all that is left for you to do is to grind the lobes. LSM produces tens of thousands of UGL’s each year for premiere aftermarket camshaft suppliers.

LSM only produces billet cores which are ideal for high-performance racing and high-end automotive OEM applications. These cams are strong due to their material and processing, allowing for more aggressive profiles and higher spring pressures. Because they are 100% machined they are precise, avoiding the casting tolerances associated with castings. Finally the lead time is much shorter than what you would see for a casting, allowing you to quickly optimize your designs and maintain lower inventory levels. SADI (Selective Austempered Ductile Iron) camshafts cannot withstand the same high stress levels that LSM billet cores can.

LSM commonly works with billet steel bar stock such as 5150, 8620 and 4140, but can produce camshafts from a variety of materials to match your particular application.

If you have a small run of specialized cams and want to grind those cams in-house we could produce prototype cam cores. Typically when our customers go this route they will order cores with a range of anticipated profiles then have LSM grind them one at a time as testing proceeds. Alternatively some engine builders will have us stock a variety of profiles that they can then have us grind to the perfect specifications for their customers.
